DECEMBER 17: HOW MANY BOOKS IS TOO MANY?

Let’s Talk Bookish is a weekly meme created by Rukky @ Eternity Books. It is hosted by Rukky @ Eternity Books and Dani @ Literary Lion. It is where different bookish topics are discussed, explained, and ruminated. Different opinions are shared and blog hopping is encouraged too.

I joined this book meme because a topic could lead to different answers. It helps me share my thoughts while being educated by other posts too. Aside from this, I get to reflect on topics that interest me. It is also a post where everyone gets to disagree to agree.

This coming holidays a lot of gifts would be exchanged. It could either be handmade or bought. As of now, I have allocated a budget but have not bought anything yet. I don’t expect books for me since I have a lot of books in my TBR. Still, if my relatives would get me books, I’m thankful. I have asked for other more essential things like socks and undergarments. Books are my least priority as gifts since I prefer to buy them myself. It is ironic, that I would like to buy books for myself than said undergarments.

There was a time which I have asked for books as gifts. However, this did not go well since most of the books I received were not my type. They were mostly books they wanted me to read. I don’t want to be ungrateful but they were just not what I have wanted. The thought usually counts but it is a waste if I would not read it. So the next Christmas, I changed my tactic and asked for cash instead, if not clothes and such. If they are adamant about giving me books, then bookstore gift cards are accepted. Sometimes I get a book that I am not interested but it has lessened to some degree. Even if this is my scenario now, I am still open to receiving books most especially the ones I want to read.

To be read and book haul posts do sometimes encourage overconsumption of books. As a book blogger, it is important to read fresh books and share them at once. However, this has its downfall because every month new releases are available. Hence, every month, the books bought last month should be read and blogged already. This is the perfect scenario that seldom happens. But, book slumps, and other unfortunate things happen. I learned that it is more important to finish a book before buying another one. Unread books are accumulated and then not read at all. This leads to a pile of books which are to be read some other time. If I had controlled my book-buying my TBR would be not in its state now. However, when I need an emergency gift, a book from my TBR is what I give. It is fun to receive and buy books but still controlling a TBR would be better in the long run for zen.

This post could be related to the secret Santa incident which has spread on Twitter. Someone tried to change another reader’s preferences by giving the recipient a fantasy book rather than the listed romance novels. The giver did not agree with the receiver’s reading taste hence her actions. I think it was selfish and should have given the books requested than force her wants. My hesitation to receive books as gifts stems from this kind of scenario too. As of now, I’m happier to receive other items than books.

This topic although easy to answer has a lot of facets.

Keep on reading and God bless,
