Synopsis

The Abyss—a gaping chasm stretching down into the depths of the earth, filled with mysterious creatures and relics from a time long past. How did it come to be? What lies at the bottom? Countless brave individuals, known as Divers, have sought to solve these mysteries of the Abyss, fearlessly descending into its darkest realms. The best and bravest of the Divers, the White Whistles, are hailed as legends by those who remain on the surface.

Riko, daughter of the missing White Whistle Lyza the Annihilator, aspires to become like her mother and explore the furthest reaches of the Abyss. However, just a novice Red Whistle herself, she is only permitted to roam its most upper layer. Even so, Riko has a chance encounter with a mysterious robot with the appearance of an ordinary young boy. She comes to name him Reg, and he has no recollection of the events preceding his discovery. Certain that the technology to create Reg must come from deep within the Abyss, the two decide to venture forth into the chasm to recover his memories and see the bottom of the great pit with their own eyes. However, they know not of the harsh reality that is the true existence of the Abyss.

Review (may contain spoilers)

Watching Made in Abyss made me think of the Ghibli movies I have watched. The sceneries look surreal. I like the ethereal scenes and this anime has a lot of it. Made in Abyss is an adult anime despite the cute characters and good-looking sceneries. Riko and Reg go thru a lot and the last 4 episodes show that adventuring in this anime is not for the faint of heart. The last few episodes in this season are the highlight for me. Its uncertainty and as the events unfold made the ending satisfying. To be honest, Riko is not my favorite character. She has an immature side that Reg balances. However, she is also not easily scared and is resourceful which Reg is not. Overall, both characters balance out the good and the bad. The last few episodes have introduced Nanachi. He is a hollow who has remained human mentally. His story was heart-wrenching and it makes me understand why this anime is a seinen.

A second season is currently airing. Also, I should watch the movies before diving into the second season. I saw the first 3 episodes and it was good. The animation was still good. It still has the ethereal look to it. I would also be tempted to go down the abyss just to see such beautiful sceneries. The plot or story of this anime is interesting and full of drama. I like that it has me wanting to watch the next episode right away. Just to get ahead of the anime I should read the manga. All in all, I am invested in Riko and the gang’s adventure. Also, the eye-pleasing sceneries are a plus too.

Thank you for reading, stay hydrated and God bless,

-R
